Doggie Dental Care?

We’re starting to notice some real funk in our pups mouthal areas.

Nice to read first thing in the morning ‘eh?

But it’s true. They are both getting older – Barton will be 7 and Lucy 5 this summer.

Are they due for real doggie teeth cleanings? Professional?

We’ve brushed their teeth, had Petsmart brush them and are even trying teeny little Greenies now to see if those help in the long run. But do you guys have any tips on doggie dental care that works and doesn’t break the bank? Greenies are even expensive!

When I asked a Petco associate this weekend she informed me that she brushes her dog’s teeth twice a day because “they’re just like humans.”

Um, not happening. Barton doesn’t drink 28 cokes a day like his mom does – so he probably doesn’t need two teeth brushings a day. Or really one.

We’re just looking for affordable and real options for keeping their mouths healthy and less stinky. Any favorite products out there?

  1. From what I’ve heard from the vet and some folks at the animal shelter where I volunteer, Greenies are worthless if your dog is a strong chewer. Greenies work only when your dog gnaws at the bone, rather than break it apart and eat it. So, if your dogs end up breaking it up, don’t bother.

(Excuse me if I ramble, but I’ve been dealing with the same doggie teeth issue — here’s my experience)

My dog is 4 1/2, and last year, we had her teeth professionally cleaned at the vet while she was undergoing a minor surgery. (This is when we learned that we had been wasting money on Greenies.) Seems that dogs’ teeth are like people’s in that some dog’s mouths are more prone to tartar build up than others. Her tartar build up is already back. To help fight it, we’ve switched her food to a higher quality dry food (from Iams to Orijen). The vet recommended real, raw, animal bones for her to gnaw on, but our dog is a weirdo and doesn’t like meat much. She much prefers apples and bananas. Luckily, apples and carrots are also natural teeth cleaners — maybe pick up some extras for your pups next time you go grocery shopping! Good luck!

    • Awesome advice thanks!! Ours like meat a bit too much and might fight over the bones so applies and bananas might be our way to go as well.

  2. We have used a product for the last 8 years by a company named Proden, called Plaque-Off that I get from Amazon or any of the dog supply websites – it’s a tiny scoop of all natural powder that we put in their food once a day and I don’t know how, but it keeps their teeth shiny white – even our vets are amazed. Our dogs are 10 and 5 and have never needed a professional cleaning and we don’t have to wrestle hold them into brushing their teeth. A bottle lasts about 4-5 months and costs about $15. Win in my book!
